Complaint Department: A Day Out With Thomas

Last weekend we took Little Dude to A Day Out With Thomas. When I came across the flyer at Quick Check, I immediately drove home and ordered the tickets. They were $18 each. OK, a little expensive, but Little Dude is CRAZY for Thomas. Besides, the flyer promised “a day of family fun”: a 25 minute ride with Thomas, Meet Sir Topham Hatt, Live Music, Build with Lego Duplo Bricks and much more.

So we drive over an hour Sunday morning to Phillipsburg Delaware River Railroad Excursions for “a day of family fun”. Allow me to use bullet-points to illustrate the fun.

  • It was crazy crowded – toddlers and preschoolers EVERYWHERE
  • I only heard recorded music – nothing live
  • We waited in line for 15 minutes just to get a picture with Thomas
  • When it was our turn, Thomas was so noisy, little dude had to cover his ears
  • Time for the ride on the coaches pulled by Thomas that were not any better than the inside of a school bus – no air, no decorations and no crowd control
  • The “conductor” that punched our tickets wasn’t dressed as a real conductor so Little Dude didn’t want to give up the tickets
  • The train ride was 13 minutes forward, then 13 minutes backwards
  • Upon getting off the coach, we were greeted with girls selling Thomas balloons – for $9 each
  • The “build with Lego Duplo Bricks was just 3 picnic tables with about 20 toddlers and preschoolers climbing everywhere
  • The professional picture taken with Thomas cost $15 for 2 5×7 prints plus an additional $40 for the digital file (hence the watermark on the picture in this post)
  • $5 for a hot dog and $8 for fries (we went to McDonalds)
  • All in all, we spent about 2 hours at A Day Out With Thomas. So much for “a day of family fun”.

The next day, we went to Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant and spent $20 on tickets for rides. So worth it!! Little Dude went on 7 rides, had cotton candy, got a temporary tattoo, and LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

Oh yeah, remember that $9 balloon I mentioned? Well the darn string wasn’t tied tight enough to it and it slipped off. There went a mylar Thomas, up up and away into the sky as Little Dude held the string. Nice way to end the day.
